Getting ready for an Arctic winter SURVIVING an Arctic winter can be a tricky business – but the children of South Oxford Middle School at least have expert advice on it. was In a visit to the school from the First Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment, they watched film of army life within the Norwegian Arctic Circle, and heard how the men learned to cope with the winter there. It all part of a humanities course run by Mr Mike Hammett, deputy head of the school, in which pupils studied ways of survival. And seeing the clothes, shoes, tents and equipment the army used, filled out some of the ideas different groups were discussing. Mr Hammett said groups of five or six pupils had imagined they were alone on a tropical, desert or Arctic island. They studied how to survive, using their environment, and learnt about the native people in each area. The school is now waiting for a visit from airmen at RAF Brize Norton who will talk about survival in the desert. PAPER EXPOSURE FLASH PERCENTAGE 27. 10.
